We got our first
Brittany, Toby, in 1974, when my daughter was three years old. I
wanted a good house dog with a great temperament and my husband
wanted a good hunting dog. Well, Toby was a great pet with an
excellent temperament, but not a good hunting dog. In our rush to
get a Brittany, we had neglected to research the breed. Our
mistake was buying Toby from a kennel that produced over 100
puppies annually. Despite his poor breeding, Toby went to
obedience school and did well. At the age of three he obtained his
Utility Dog Degree in 4 shows.
In
1978 we purchased our second Brittany, a dog from Michigan. This
time we researched the breed. I read the standard, and tried to
watch other Brittany’s at the shows in which Toby was entered.
After much studying, I selected Carol Auten as my breeder. I
wanted a female puppy but she only had one male available. I was
scared, but we purchased Tyler, and his excellent breeding proved
his worth. In eight straight shows Tyler completed his
Championship. He was broke (steady to wing and shot) at 14 months.
Our
foundation female, Ch JenMar's Toast of the Town CD was also
purchased from Carol Auten . She was bred in 1980 and her first
litter of seven produced one Dual Champion, six Show Champions,
and many field trial placements. They were excellent gun dogs. In
all, we have produced over 200 Champions, 6 Duals, several Junior
and Senior Hunters, and twelve, Master Hunters with all Show
Championships. To maintain the
excellent quality of our puppies, we only breed one-two litter per
year. We believe in QUALITY NOT
QUANTITY. each pup gets our full attention.
My
daughter, Jennifer, was 16 years old when she got her first Best
In Show with O.J. (Ch. Carosel
Tropic-Ana of JenMar SH). O.J. was a great show dog and an
excellent field dog. He earned his Senior Hunter and field trial
placements and was the number one Brittany in 1985 and 1986,
showing that the judges saw the quality of the dog in spite of his
young handler's age.
We
believe in finding each dog the home it deserves. We breed, show,
and hunt our Brittany's, we obtain Titles on each and
everyone, so that they are proven Brits. I would not breed
anything that isn't OFA, plus a Champion, and have Senior Hunter,
or Master Hunter. I have spent an extensive amount of time
learning about this breed and studying its genetics. I strive to
breed healthy and sound Brittany's, well socialized pups, that
exceed all the breed standards in health, stability, and type. I
believe a Brittany should look like the standard, have a great
temperament, exhibit no genetic defects, and possess an intense
hunting desire, all at a reasonable price.
Our
breeding program focuses on the DUAL CONCEPT. We hunt our Show
Dogs. All of our puppies are capable of many accomplishments, but
still make a wonderful, loving pets.
